Beautifully illustrated children's story set in France in 1783 about Mouton the sheep, who is fascinated by the thought of flying and gets her wish when she is sent up in the Montgolfier brothers' hot air balloon. Inspired by actual events in which Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier actually launched a hot air balloon with three passengers-a sheep, a duck, and a rooster. All three survived the eight-minute flight, which paved the way for future flight experiments with animals and started a ballooning craze in France in the late 1700s. After the initial flight, the sheep was sent to live with Marie Antoinette's animal menagerie at Versailles. Thirty pages, not numbered, with watercolor illustrations by the author.
